The Office for Students (OfS)has opened an investigation into the University of Greater Manchester to assess whether its governance arrangements meet regulatory requirements set out in the higher education framework.
The regulator said it will consider whether the university’s governing documents uphold the public interest governance principles and whether management and oversight structures are adequate and effective.
As part of its review, the Office for Students will examine how the university delivers the governance principles in practice and whether it complies with all conditions of registration.
While the move signals potential concerns that need further scrutiny, the OfS stressed that the opening of an investigation does not indicate wrongdoing or non-compliance.
Greater Manchester Police has already begun a separate investigation following allegations of financial and other irregularities at the institution. The Office for Students said it will co-operate with police while carrying out its own independent inquiry.
