University of Liverpool relaxes hybrid working plans after strike action
UCU said the university’s management had tried to mandate professional services staff onto campus for 60% of their working time

The University and College Union (UCU) has welcomed the University of Liverpool’s decision to cancel plans to force staff onto campus three days a week as part of hybrid working proposals.
The union said the university’s management had tried to mandate professional services staff onto campus for 60% of their working time.
However, UCU and Unite were able to negotiate new terms with the university, including improved safety and equality protections, meaning staff now only have to spend 40% of their time on campus, unless they choose more.
It comes as over 300 professional services staff at the university took strike action in June and have been working to rule since.
Strike action on A-level results day and freshers week was called off following the u-turn.
UCU regional support official Marie Monaghan said: “The decision to relax the hybrid working plans and improve safety measures at the University of Liverpool is a victory for staff who have been supporting students for years from home and in person. We now look forward to jointly developing a hybrid working policy ahead of its rollout in the new year.”
