Kent County Council (KCC) has announced that staff and pupils at Teynham Parochial Church of England Primary School have moved into a new building following an £11m redevelopment project.

The site, which was delivered in partnership with the council, the Diocese of Canterbury and construction firm WW Martin, includes 14 classrooms, a nursery, a food technology room, and space that is set to become a sensory facility.

KCC had initially considered expanding the original school building, constructed in 1974, but assessments found it was no longer fit for use.

As a result, planning on the new building began in 2023, with construction starting in spring 2024.

Liz Pearson, head teacher of Teynham Parochial Church of England Primary School, said: “It has been amazing so far. We have 205 pupils and they have settled in so well. It has been incredible watching the children’s reaction to the building. I’ve had pupils coming up to me all week telling me how much they love their new classrooms.

“It feels like we have been here a long time already, it is better than I could have expected. The support we have had from the parents and local community has been overwhelming.”

From September 2026, the school will expand from a one-form entry to a two-form entry primary, doubling its Reception intake from 30 to 60 pupils. This change will eventually increase overall capacity to 420 children.

The site also features 256 solar panels, a practical skills classroom, a learning resource area, and spaces for breakfast and after-school clubs. Dedicated intervention areas have also been created to support individual learning.

The next phase, which includes demolishing the old school, will begin this summer. It will be followed by landscaping, a new car park with electric vehicle charging points and cycle shelters, and a fenced multi-use games area. Completion is expected by December.

Beverley Fordham, KCC cabinet member for education and skills, added: “It is brilliant to see staff and pupils now enjoying the fantastic new facilities available at Teynham Parochial Church of England Primary School.

“The fact young people were able to access practical training opportunities and work experience through the project is a great example of how the right collaborative approach can open up opportunities.”
