The Department of Education has launched a campaign to recruit school governors for voluntary grammar schools across Northern Ireland.

It comes as most boards of governors are due to be reconstituted in 2025. Governors work alongside principals and staff to help manage schools, playing what the department describes as a “vital role”.

Governor appointments are for a four-year term. The department said anyone aged 18 or over is eligible to apply, and encouraged applications from all parts of the community.

In addition, it was stated that no prior experience or qualifications are required.

Education minister, Paul Givan, said: “School governors are volunteers who come from all backgrounds to play a vital role in the running of our schools. If you have a strong commitment and a willingness to make a unique difference to young people in your local community, I encourage you to apply to be a school governor.

“You do not need to have formal qualifications to serve as a governor. Volunteers can bring a wide range of skills and experience from their working and personal lives to school Boards of Governors. Being a school governor provides various opportunities to develop new skills.”

He added: “I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all those that have previously volunteered to become a school governor. Their commitment, dedication and contribution, has made a positive impact to the greater school community.”
