Caerphilly County Borough Council has revealed that construction work is due to begin this week at Islwyn High School in Oakdale on new sports and pupil support facilities.

Around £950k will be invested in the project, which includes a new multi-use games area (MUGA) and a specialist support centre for pupils. Work is scheduled to start today (27 October), with completion expected early in the new year.

McAvoy has been appointed as contractor, with Caerphilly Homes – the council’s housing division – managing the scheme.

The MUGA will be built within the school grounds, replacing the previous facility at the former Oakdale Comprehensive School site. That site is now being redeveloped into Oakdale Place, a mixed-tenure housing scheme of energy-efficient homes.

Alongside the sports area, the school will create a new space for multi-disciplinary support and tailored interventions, aimed at helping pupils build skills and confidence to manage their learning and wellbeing.

Councillor Shayne Cook, cabinet member for housing, said: “The new MUGA and pupil support facilities at Islwyn High School are a fantastic example of how our investment in housing and community infrastructure go hand in hand.

“As work progresses on the Oakdale Place housing development, it’s important that we continue to deliver on our commitment to the wider community by providing modern, accessible amenities that benefit everyone.”
