Glasgow City Council has revealed that its executive director of education, Douglas Hutchison, has resigned with immediate effect following concerns about messages he sent to a councillor regarding the authority’s 2024/2025 budget.
The council confirmed that in spring 2024 Hutchison responded to text messages from a member of the council about the upcoming budget.
While officers are permitted to provide advice to elected members from all parties, the authority said the exchanges “may have strayed into potentially undermining the council’s budget process and may have breached rules on political restriction”.
According to the statement, Hutchison realised last week that the messages could become public and, after reviewing them, decided to raise the issue with the council’s chief executive.
He immediately informed the chief executive and offered his resignation, which was accepted.
The council said it would make no further comment, and that Hutchison is not expected to issue a statement at this time.
