Aberdeen City Council opens new £30.3m Riverbank School
The three-stream primary has been designed to deliver modern facilities and greater capacity for the local community

Aberdeen City Council has officially opened Riverbank School in Tillydrone following a £30.3m investment.
Located on Coningham Gardens, the purpose-built campus replaces the former Riverbank School on Dill Road and provides space for up to 651 pupils, along with Early Learning and Nursery provision for 60 children. The three-stream primary has been designed to deliver modern facilities and greater capacity for the local community.
The campus includes a 3G sports pitch, outdoor play and learning areas, and flexible classroom spaces to support a range of teaching approaches.
Cllr Martin Greig, convener of the council’s education and children’s services committee, said: “It is a great pleasure to officially open the new Riverbank School. This building will be an excellent place of learning and care for young people in the area for generations to come.”
Susan Ironside, head teacher of Riverbank School, added: “It’s a real privilege to officially welcome our pupils and families into this incredible new building. We’re proud to offer a modern, inclusive environment that supports every child to thrive.”
The opening ceremony featured musical performances by pupils and the burial of a time capsule containing class photographs, a school sweatshirt, and a letter from the head teacher to her successor in 2050.
The new Riverbank School stands on the site of the former Tillydrone Infant School and part of the former St Machar Primary School.
