Staff at INTO Manchester, a private college for international students, are set to strike for two days this month in a dispute over pay, the University and College Union (UCU) has announced.
Walkouts are scheduled for 25 and 30 September, with staff due to join picket lines outside the college on both days. The union has urged management to attend conciliation talks with the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) and table an improved pay offer.
UCU said 97% of members backed strike action on a turnout of 83%. The union claims the college’s current offer of a 2% rise represents a real-terms pay cut against inflation.
The college charges international students up to £38,000 a year and last year reported more than £20m in profit, with £15m paid out in dividends, UCU said.
General secretary Jo Grady said: “Even at this late stage we hope INTO Manchester makes our members a fair offer that will allow us to resolve the dispute before going out on strike. Two percent is an insult to staff who have been working hard for students, while shareholders have taken over £20m in profits out of the system.”
