Our Lady’s Abingdon School has announced it is set to close with immediate effect after governors said they had “exhausted all options” to secure its future.
The independent Catholic school, which has operated for more than 160 years, said talks with other schools and organisations over a possible merger or acquisition ended last week without agreement.
Governors cited several economic pressures, including the introduction of VAT on school fees, higher National Insurance contributions, the end of business rates relief for independent schools, and rising operational costs.
They said efforts to limit fee increases had been undermined by falling pupil numbers in recent months, which threatened the school’s viability.
The closure will affect families in the Abingdon area and staff, who will be supported through the redundancy process. The school said it would help families secure alternative places in Oxfordshire and ensure Year 11 and Year 13 pupils receive full support with exam results and progression.
In a statement, the school’s governors said: “We are truly heartbroken to have taken the decision to close OLA. Our deepest gratitude goes to the remarkable staff, loyal parents, and inspiring students who have made OLA such a special place for so many years. The spirit of this community, and the values it upholds, will endure long after our doors close.”
