The University of West London (UWL) has announced the appointment of professor Anthony Hilton as its new deputy vice-chancellor for academics, starting November.
Hilton, a microbiologist and senior academic leader, will oversee the university’s academic mission and curriculum, strengthen its research profile, and lead the creation of new medical and dental schools.
He joins from Aston University in Birmingham, where he has held senior leadership roles across education, research and engagement. He has more than 30 years of experience in academia, healthcare and industry, and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and the Institute of Biomedical Science, as well as a national teaching fellow.
Hilton has also served on the board of the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, where he helped secure university hospital trust status. He is widely recognised for his work in microbiology education and public engagement, with appearances on television and at international events.
Peter John, vice-chancellor of UWL, said: “We are looking forward to Anthony joining us here at the university, where we are embarking on another period of critical growth with plans to further increase our provision, and open two new schools – the School of Dentistry in autumn 2026 and a medical school thereafter.
“I have no doubt that Anthony’s considerable experience, knowledge and expertise will help deliver on these ambitious strategic goals, further anchoring the university in the community and region we serve.”
Hilton added: “Impact 2028 sets out a bold and compelling vision for UWL and I’m delighted to be joining the university at this exciting time.
“I’m particularly keen to support the university to deliver its strategic objectives in STEM where I have a professional interest and bring a wealth of experience, however I am equally excited about joining a university community with historical strengths in music and the creative industries where I have a longstanding passion and personal interest.”
