Peterborough greenlights plans for new 420-pupil primary school
The Department for Education has already appointed Hampton Academies Trust to run the new school

Peterborough City Council has approved detailed plans for a new 420-pupil primary school and nursery as part of the Great Haddon urban extension, with construction due to begin this summer.
The two-form entry school, which will provide 60 places in each year group and a nursery for up to 50 children, will be a split-level building with classrooms, offices, a kitchen, a main hall and welfare facilities, alongside a multi-use games area and playing field with an athletic track.
A development first signed off in 2015, the Great Haddon urban extension will eventually deliver 5,350 homes, three shopping centres, three primary schools, one secondary school and other amenities.
The Department for Education has already appointed Hampton Academies Trust to run the new school.
Helen Price, executive headteacher of Hampton Academies Trust, said: “We are really looking forward to delivering a fantastic school for the new community of Great Haddon.
“In the months before the school opens we will be holding information events for parents and carers and keeping the whole community updated about the progress of the building via our social media feeds.”
The council will lead and fund the build, with the school due to open in September 2026. It will be delivered via the free school presumption route, meaning it will operate as a state-funded academy independent of council control.
Cllr Katy Cole, cabinet member for children’s services at Peterborough City Council, added: “Peterborough is one of the country’s fastest growing cities and we are committed to ensuring we have the right infrastructure in place to meet the demands of a growing population which will need additional school places.”
The primary school will employ 50 staff, with a further 10 at the nursery. Some 60 parking spaces will also be provided for staff and visitors.
